virtio-fs + VM Templating

Peng, Stefan, While working on enabling virtio-fs on Kata there was a small confusion on whether virtio-fs can work with VM Templating. With the current setup of kata, VM templating and virtio-fs are mutually exclusive (VM templating is enabled in qemu-lite and virtio-fs currently only with NEMU), but they will converge very soon. An open question we had was, would they both work with each other given that VM templating turns off memory sharing for all VMs other than the first one and virtio-fs expects guest memory be shared & file-backed for all VMs. Can both these features to be enabled in kata at the same time and if so, what are we missing to get to that end point? I will open a bug once we know what needs to be worked on to make this happen. -- Ganesh

Hello Kata Citizens, On behalf of myself, Fabiano Fidêncio, and Ricardo Aravena, as the approved election officials, it's a pleasure to announce that the Kata Containers Architecture Committee Elections for February 2021 are open! There are two Architecture Committee seats up for election. The seats up for election are currently filled by `Xu Wang`, and `Samuel Ortiz`. The timeline for the election process is: • Election officials approved by AC: February 23 * February 24, 15:00 UTC - March 10, 2021 14:59 UTC: Candidate nominations open * March 10, 15:00 UTC - March 22, 2021 14:59 UTC: Q&A/Debate period * March 23, 15:00 UTC - March 29, 2021 14:59 UTC: Voting open * March 30, 2021, results announced The window will be open for candidates to post their submissions, from February 24th, 15:00 UTC. The process to submit a nomination is: 1) Review the responsibilities of the Architecture Committee members [1] 2) Between now and March 3 at 14:59 UTC, you can declare your candidacy for one of the open seats by submitting a text file with your name (please put your name as the file name), the reason for running, and your platform/objectives to this folder [2]. Please also send a message to the kata-dev ML with this same info, declaring your candidacy. Who can vote: Anyone who has had a commit merged into the project in the last 12 months will be eligible to vote. All eligible voters will receive an email with a link to the voting system once the voting period opens. More details of the election process are outlined at [3] and in the etherpad at [4]. Note, once candidacy entry has closed and we enter the debate period, where we will be openly asking the candidates some questions around their candidacy. govmm/Kata integration, revisited

So.. I just discovered I had a mail misconfiguration which meant at least one recent message I sent to the list on the govmm stuff didn't get through. Which probably explains why I had a different idea of what was going on that other people seem to have had. I proposed the integration of govmm into the Kata repository for two reasons: 1) To avoid the back and forth of synchronized govmm & Kata changes 2) To avoid maintaining another external interface When I first pitched it to Fabiano I had the impression that Kata was the only user of govmm making it an internal interface in practice, so (1) was the main motivation. Having discovered that's not the case, though, (2) is really the more important factor. The Kata team really doesn't have the resources to maintain a general VMM interface - which is in fact an extremely difficult problem (witness the complexity of libvirt). It's made more difficult by the fact that there's not really a natural API boundary in between qemu itself and Kata's hypervisor interface, so what is and isn't in govmm is already pretty arbitrary and based on Kata's needs. AIUI, at the last AC meeting, the decision was made to move govmm into the kata-containers repo, encouraging external users to consume it from the new location. That addresses (1), but not (2), since it's still effectively an external interface. It makes the dilineation of that interface even less clear than it already is. So, I really think this is a bad approach. Instead, what I believe we should do is leave the govmm repository as is, but orphaned, for external users. They can take up maintenance of it, if they have the interest. For Kata, I think we should simply fork the current govmm state, removing any parts we don't need, and in future make no attempt to keep it as anything but an internal interface tailored for Kata's needs. I believe this will let us make some significant simplifications. My issue and pull request (#2393 and #2395) were made with the latter approach in mind, and I'm presently holding off on merging until we're clear on how we're proceding here. -- David Gibson | I'll have my music baroque, and my code david AT gibson.dropbear.id.au | minimalist, thank you. Confidential Containers at CNCF TAG-Runtime

Kata ML upgrade - Thursday August 26 at 16:00UTC

Hi all, The OpenDev team needs to perform operating system upgrades on the system that hosts lists.katacontainers.io. This upgrade will be performed in place to preserve email reputation for the server's IP addresses. A two to three hour outage is expected. Email can continue to be sent during the outage as smtp will queue messages until the service returns; however, mailing list archives will not be accessible during this time. Work is expected to start on Thursday August 26 at 16:00UTC. Confidential Computing Meeting - 2021/08/26

Hi Everyone, First of all, many thanks to Tobin for nicely driving the past 2 meetings! Although I missed last week meeting, I see that there were some really interesting discussions about CI next steps and also KBS. A CCv0 branch is currently being worked on, and I think we will follow up on KBS in the next meetings. We want to understand the fundamental differences between the main implementations and see if there’s a potential path to convergence/sharing. This week we’ll go through our usual status update and also look closer at our September milestone. We’re getting close to it, and we want to understand if there’s anything blocked or if we believe some tasks won’t be completed by early September. We’ll also briefly touch on the planned CNCF TAG-runtime presentation, and finally we’ll have Sergio Lopez from Red Hat presenting libkrun. Mentoring/ Internship Opportunties!

Hello Everyone! I recently presented this topic at the AC meeting today (Aug 17th) but I wanted to make sure we have as much visibility as possible :) So! There are two opportunities that are rapidly approaching for mentoring students to work on Kata Containers. Outreachy - Would be one intern from December until March - Next Steps- Get setup as a project in the program + propose a project for the potential intern to work on - Deadline to get project proposal submitted: September 3rd Boston University - Would be about 5 students working together from September till December - Next Step- I will connect mentor(s) interested with the professor and help you draft a project proposal for the students to work on - Deadline to get draft project proposal submitted: September 2nd Both opportunities would be great to get involved in! If you are interested in mentoring but are scared about the time commitment, you can co mentor with another, but in my experience it ranges from one to three hours a week, where most of the time is spent reviewing the students/mentee's patches. These sorts of opportunities are really good for bringing new contributors into the community. New contributors bring different perspectives and new energy which is worth a lot, especially these days when we all have been in a bit of a slump the last couple years with the virus, etc. If you are interested in one of these, please let me know ASAP!
