virtio-fs + VM Templating

Peng, Stefan, While working on enabling virtio-fs on Kata there was a small confusion on whether virtio-fs can work with VM Templating. With the current setup of kata, VM templating and virtio-fs are mutually exclusive (VM templating is enabled in qemu-lite and virtio-fs currently only with NEMU), but they will converge very soon. An open question we had was, would they both work with each other given that VM templating turns off memory sharing for all VMs other than the first one and virtio-fs expects guest memory be shared & file-backed for all VMs. Can both these features to be enabled in kata at the same time and if so, what are we missing to get to that end point? I will open a bug once we know what needs to be worked on to make this happen. -- Ganesh

February 2020 Kata Containers Architecture Committee elections are open!

Hello Kata Citizens, On behalf of myself, Graham Whaley (from Intel), and Ricardo Aravena (rico) as the approved election officials, it's a pleasure to announce that the Kata Containers architecture committee elections for February 2020 are open! The timeline for the election process is: * Election officials approved by AC: February 4 * Candidacy open: February 5-12 * "Debate period": February 13-23 * Voting: February 24 - March 1 * Results: March 2 The window is now open for candidates to post their submissions. The process to submit a nomination is: 1) Review the responsibilities of the Architecture Committee members [1] 2) Between now and Feb 12 at 14:59 UTC, you can declare your candidacy for one of the open seats by submitting a textfile with your name (please put your name as the file name), the reason for running and your platform/objectives to this folder [2]. Please also send a message to the kata-dev ML with this same info, declaring your candidacy. Who can vote: Anyone who has had a commit merged into the project in the last 12 months will be eligible to vote. All eligible voters will receive an email with a link to the voting system once the voting period opens. More details of the election process are outlined at [3] and in the etherpad at [4]. Note, once candidacy entry has closed and we enter the debate period. We will be openly asking the candidates some questions around their candidacy. Arch Committee Election: Q&A period open!

Hello all, We have three candidate submissions for the Architecture Committee election, where we have two seats available. Thus, we shall enter the Q&A and subsequently the voting phases. The next period (Feb13-23rd) is for asking questions to candidates via this mailing list; it's an opportunity to get familiar with the perspective they would bring as an Arch Committee member before voting opens on the 24th. Kata releases 1.11.0-alpha0, 1.10.1 and 1.9.5 available

Hi All, Kata alpha release 1.11.0-alpha0 is out. With this alpha release, we introduced several features including support for kernel stable version 5.4.15. We added support for ipv6 with integration tests added to verify ipv6 with Docker. The "newstore" feature has been an experimental feature for a long time. This feature has now transitioned to a formal feature. The newstore feature guarantees better compatibility between different versions of Kata components. We now support Firecracker version 0.20.0 and Cloud Hypervisor v0.5.x stable branch with this release. Several improvements were made for rootless support including fixing rootless for net=none, leveraging the libcontainer API for rootless functionalities and supporting "--rootless" runtime flag. Stable releases 1.10.1 and 1.9.5 are also available now. Thanks, Archana

kata in non-baremetal environments

Hi, it seems that nowadays a large chunk of k8s deployments being run in virtualized enviroments (i.e. some form of public/private IaaS system). So using kata-containers in such an enviroment means that the VMs spawned by kata are running nested inside the VMs of the k8s cluster. Given that nested virtualization adds quite a bit of overhead (in certain cases I believe) and that it still seems to be considered experimental [0]. Training session on Bitergia dashboard, Feb 17

Hi Kata-kats, Since last year, the Kata Containers community dashboard is available at katacontainers.biterg.io. It shows a series of pre-defined dashboards that let you extract metrics from GitHub, git and ML data. However the real power of the Bitergia toolkit is when you go to the next level and drill down and filter for more relevant data, or when you build your own analysis and visualization. In order to present those features and answer community questions, we've set up a video training session with Bitergia which will happen on Jitsi Meet[1] Monday, February 17 at 1600 UTC[2]. I am leading the secure container development team in Ant Financial currently and working for the Cloud-Native open-source of Alibaba as a member of the Ali Open Source TOC. Our team has been working on not only contributing upstream, but also deploying Kata Containers in the productions since we joined Ant Financial. Before joining Ant Financial, Our team, the hyper.sh, had been kept contributing to Kata Containers and related communities since day 0 of Kata. It was my great honor to involve the creating of the Kata Containers project and became an initial member of the Architecture Committee together with Samual Ortiz. In the past months, we celebrated the two year anniversary of Kata. Look back at the past two years, we have improved the isolation in the container world at the expense of some overhead. We believe the container world needs a better isolation solution without hurts on the application-centric nature of Cloud-Native.
